Question: Our band has been asked to perform at a charity event without being paid. Should we do it? Jeff Smith, Portland OR
Answer: There are several things to consider when offered an opportunity without pay. Although it is always good to help out a charity you believe in if you can but as a professional you must weigh a few things. Will it give you exposure to an audience that would like to see you again at a paying venue? How much if anything will it cost you in out of pocket expenses do to the event? Will there be networking opportunities at the event to meet other entertainers in your field and or promoters or producers who might book you later? If you do the event you should have a picture or video of your performance so that you can post it on your website and let others who support that cause know about your work. Question: Do I really Need A Website For My Band? Mary Jones, Washington, DC
Answer: The short answer is YES! You not only need a site that shows what you can do but also provides the ability for producers and promoters to book you, you need to update it frequently, link to as many other sites as possible, have keywords on your homepage for internet search engines and do whatever you can to have your site ranked as high as you can.
